Grammatical Inference a Magical Mystery Tour

چکیده

How do children learn language? Is it already in their heads when they are born, or do they acquire language through experience? Is it possible to program a computer to learn a language using techniques which are possibly available to the human infant? Grammatical Inference strives to automatically infer a grammar for a language from a subset of the strings in the language, and possibly also a set of strings not in the language. There are many useful applications which will beneet from a general Grammatical Inference Engine, such as speech and image recognition, natural language processing systems, and database query engines. In this paper I give a general overview of the relatively new eld of Grammatical Inference, starting from its application in a speech recognition system. I cover most of the commonly used techniques, and discuss some of the objections raised by linguists to these techniques. In a subsequent paper I will describe my project in detail and will cover the more philosophical aspects of this eld, such as the human language acquisition debate. These papers will hopefully serve to illustrate the power of proba-bilistic approaches to Linguists and Engineers alike.

" Brain-magic " : Figures of the Brain, Technology and Magic

In the early days of cyberculture, VR technologies seemed to promise an engagement with the non-sensory, perhaps a trip inside – or at least via a brain separated from the problems of the body. The brain was phantasised as a magical place through which we could tour the entire world a world that was entirely under our control. These phantasies of enhanced mind have a prehistory, one that is wel...

The Magical Mystery Four: How is Working Memory Capacity Limited, and Why?

Working memory storage capacity is important because cognitive tasks can be completed only with sufficient ability to hold information as it is processed. The ability to repeat information depends on task demands but can be distinguished from a more constant, underlying mechanism: a central memory store limited to 3 to 5 meaningful items in young adults. I will discuss why this central limit is...

A Layman’s Guide to M-Theory

The best candidate for a fundamental unified theory of all physical phenomena is no longer ten-dimensional superstring theory but rather eleven-dimensional M-theory. In the words of Fields medalist Edward Witten, “M stands for ‘Magical’, ‘Mystery’ or ‘Membrane’, according to taste”. New evidence in favor of this theory is appearing daily on the internet and represents the most exciting developm...

Problems with Evaluation of Unsupervised Empirical Grammatical Inference Systems

Empirical grammatical inference systems are practical systems that learn structure from sequences, in contrast to theoretical grammatical inference systems, which prove learnability of certain classes of grammars. All current empirical grammatical inference evaluation methods are problematic, i.e. dependency on language experts, appropriateness and quality of an underlying grammar of the data, ...

Developing JSequitur to Study the Hierarchical Structure of Biological Sequences in a Grammatical Inference Framework of String Compression Algorithms

Grammatical inference methods are expected to find grammatical structures hidden in biological sequences. One hopes that studies of grammar serve as an appropriate tool for theory formation. Thus, we have developed JSequitur for automatically generating the grammatical structure of biological sequences in an inference framework of string compression algorithms. Our original motivation was to fi...
